Gloucestershire contractor is to be appointed to demolish the buildings at 320 Swindon Road to make way for Cheltenham Borough Homes (CBH) on behalf of Cheltenham Borough Council, to deliver 24 new homes on the unused, derelict, brownfield site.
This means work on this exciting regeneration development, which forms part of the Council’s £180m investment in quality homes and thriving, can take another step forward.
The demolition works will take around 3 weeks to complete. Work is underway to finalise the tender package to procure a contractor partner to build out the 24 new homes, which have been designed as an exemplar carbon neutral scheme in response to the council’s climate emergency. Solar panels, green roofs and low carbon construction have been factored in to provide homes with a more natural living environment and a high environmental performance.
Outside space has also been put aside for trees and greenery, making room available for hedgehog highways, bat, bee, and bird boxes to allow wildlife to flourish too. Following the tendering process, the intention is for the main building works to commence on site in the Autumn.
Councillor Mike Collins, Cabinet Member for Housing, Cheltenham Borough Council said: “These new homes will really help bring to life this unused area for both people, nature, and biodiversity as part of the Council’s £180m housing investment plan. This development continues the Council’s commitment to increase the supply of homes and support wider regeneration.”
Councillor Max Wilkinson, Cabinet Member for Climate Emergency added: “Climate change is the biggest challenge we face which is why Cheltenham declared a climate emergency. We’re working with important partners like Cheltenham Borough Homes to achieve a range of actions to continue our pathway to net zero. Using a local firm to assist with the demolition is a great way to kick off the project.”
Alison Salter, CBH head of development, said: “I am delighted Gloucester Asbestos Ltd are helping get this exciting project underway. Once the site is cleared, we are on the next important step to bringing people and the environment together to provide much needed homes now and for generations to come.”
Josh Bishop, GAL added: “Gloucester Asbestos Ltd are looking forward to working with Cheltenham Borough homes on this local project.”
The project at Swindon Road follows on from the completion of twenty-seven affordable homes at Radford Court, three properties at Cordwainers Road and eight properties at Ingleborough Mews.'
