We're celebrating a significant milestone this month as April marks our 20th birthday.
As a nod to everyone, past and present, who has helped Cheltenham Borough Homes (CBH) evolve into a people focussed organisation, we're encouraging our customers, colleagues and partners to reminisce and share their fond memories throughout the year.
The landmark year is also an opportunity to look ahead to the exciting aspirations within Cheltenham Borough Council’s (CBC’s) 5 year HRA (Housing Revenue Account) Business plan. Working in close partnership with CBC, we plan to deliver more new net zero affordable homes within the town to support the Council’s drive towards Net Zero by 2030, improve the standards of existing homes, and work together to support communities to be strong and resilient in these most challenging of times.
Our Chief Executive, Steve Slater shares some words below:
“Over the last 20 years we’ve made a positive difference to many lives across Cheltenham. We do this by listening to customers and working together to build stronger communities by providing people with the support they need to thrive.”
“We’re always thinking one step ahead to make sure we’re there when our customers need us during those unprecedented moments. The Gloucestershire floods in 2007 is one of many great examples of our amazing colleagues pulling together to look after the wider community. As a result of the floods, the water treatment works were breached and Cheltenham was without water for 18 days. We responded immediately and were proactive in delivering water to vulnerable residents until water supplies returned.”
“During the Covid crisis, we carried out welfare calls to identify customers who needed help with accessing food, prescriptions, emergency repairs and benefit and money advice. Not only did we work with partners to deliver on those areas but we also put people’s mental and social wellbeing first, providing a friendly voice and virtual coffee mornings to reduce social isolation in our communities.”
“We have a strong track record of building relationships and trust in communities. Starting from our old community house in St Pauls, where we delivered a diverse range of projects including junior wardens, young leaders and activities during the school holidays to inspire and help young people discover new interests. These activities have grown and are now being delivered in all our communities across Cheltenham. This engagement has evolved into groups set up by residents with the support of CBH and our partners. One of many examples is the Monkscroft Action Group (MAG), which is all about positive change, harnessing community spirit, and providing local people with new opportunities to develop their skills and thrive.”
Steve Slater finishes: “This is a proud moment for everyone who’s been involved with CBH over the years and it’s a terrific opportunity to celebrate our successes and achievements. Last year, our research showed that 90 per cent of customers thought their rent was value for money and 86 per cent were happy with the quality of their home but, whilst that’s great to hear, we’re not going to be complacent. We know we need to keep talking to customers, so we can continue to play our part in creating a better future for Cheltenham.”
Councillor Victoria Atherstone, Cabinet Member for Housing, Cheltenham Borough Council said:
This really is an important milestone for everyone involved and a fantastic example of the strong working partnership we have with Cheltenham Borough Homes. It’s a great time to take a step back, breathe and reflect on all the fantastic achievements and successes over the years which has transformed CBH into the people focussed organisation it is today.”
“I’d like to thank colleagues, customers, volunteers and partners both in the past and the present for their hard work over the last 20 years. Our shared passion to make a positive difference to the lives of people in Cheltenham wouldn’t be possible without their collective efforts. Anyone can drive change and CBH’s success shows that we all have a role to play in making sure we all continue to look after each other and our communities.”
“Looking to the future, it’s definitely looking bright and I’m excited to work closely with CBH to build a brighter future for our residents.”
