A number of network providers are installing their fibre optic networks across Cheltenham. This is the cabling that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use when selling customers broadband packages and means you will be able to access high-speed broadband connections if you choose to.
Initially the network providers are installing their cabling to cover certain areas of Cheltenham but have only given us limited information on their rollout programmes.
We do not know whether individually they intend to cover the whole town or just certain areas and we have no control over their rollout programmes.
Once the networks have been installed the ISPs will look to sign up customers and this is when you may receive promotional information from them. Each ISP will have a range of packages/tariffs including social tariffs for those eligible.
The rollout of these fibre networks will not affect any of your existing TV, broadband or landline services. It will offer more options of broadband services for you to choose from.
What this means for you
If you live in a block of more than four flats
The network providers Openreach, Cityfibre and Netomnia have obtained permission from Cheltenham Borough Council (CBC) to install their network within the block. No other network installers will, at this stage, be permitted to install their networks in blocks.
When the network provider decides to rollout their network to a block, they are required to contact us and agree how they will install the cabling, ensuring they do not cause damage to the building or cause any issues for the future.
Once we have approved the plans, they will install cabling with a connection outside the front door to each flat. You may then receive promotional information from the ISPs with their packages. If you decide to sign up to one of these then they will arrange to make a connection into your flat. Any contract entered into is between you and the ISP.
If you live in a house, bungalow or in a small block of less than four flats or maisonettes
Once the network is ‘live’ in your street, you can contact the ISPs (or they will contact you) with regard to the packages/tariffs they are able to offer you. If you decide to take out a broadband package with them, they will require you to confirm that you have the landlord’s consent.
You will need to contact us via email housing@cbh.org or by freephone 0800 408 0000 to request permission. We will then issue you with a letter confirming consent, together with some conditions of this consent. Network providers will not be limited to Openreach, Cityfibre or Netomnia. Again, any contract you enter will be between you and the ISP.
