We have two types of tenancy agreements:

Yes! as long as:

• You have been a tenant – with us, Cheltenham Borough Council or another public sector landlord (like another council or housing association) – or lived in armed forces accommodation – for five years.
• You do not live in specialist housing (e.g. for elderly or disabled people).

You can apply to take over someone else’s tenancy, but only if:

• The current tenant has given us notice that they wish to leave
• You were living at the same address as the tenant when they gave us notice
• You still live at that address now

Whether we allow you to take over the tenancy or not will depend on your circumstances and the type of property it is.

If a tenant dies, there are some circumstances in which a tenancy can be passed on.

Provided that the tenancy hasn’t already been succeeded, the tenant’s partner can apply to take over the tenancy as long as they have lived there for at least the past 12 months. In certain circumstances a tenant’s  family members may be eligible to take on the tenancy.

You can sub-let part of your home, but not all of it, so you can take in a lodger.

Before you do this, you must contact us and get our permission in writing. We will check the circumstances before giving the go ahead (for example, making sure the person hasn’t got a history of anti-social behaviour or if it would cause overcrowding in the property).

We allow you to keep pets so long as they:

• do not annoy or frighten other people
• are not banned by law
• are suitable for your home or garden

We ask that all dog owners:

• don’t allow it to annoy other people e.g. by barking
• don’t allow it to destroy any part of the property
• clean up any mess

If a tenant breaks the above rules, they are breaking their Tenancy Agreement and it will be treated as anti-social behaviour (ASB). You can report ASB to us here.
