Following the completion of preparation works on the exciting new development at Monkscroft Villas in Cheltenham, it’s all systems go for the new homes to be built.
After intensive clearance work, including the gutting and demolition of the existing properties, representatives from Cheltenham Borough Homes (CBH) and Cheltenham Borough Council (CBC) came together to break ground and kick start the construction phase of the £4.3 million project.
Gloucester based construction firm E G Carter & Co Ltd is leading on the redevelopment of the site on Princess Elizabeth Way which will bring 27 affordable new homes in Cheltenham. The scheme forms part of a wider £100m Housing Investment Plan by CBC and CBH to deliver quality homes for all and build great communities in the town.
The scheme, which is being delivered in partnership with CBC, will see the existing three properties on the site knocked down and replaced with a mixture of modern one and two bed housing including photovoltaic panels - helping to reduce energy costs by storing unused energy in batteries for future use. The properties will also incorporate cycle spaces, parking and landscaping.
Paul Stephenson, Chief Executive Officer at Cheltenham Borough Homes, said: “We are delighted to be working with local company E G Carter & Co Ltd who have a proven track record of delivering high quality housing.
“This is a significant opportunity to revive this site which has needed to be redeveloped for a long time. Now that the area has been cleared, we’re excited to be in a position to start construction work which will make a difference to the town and the people who live in it – building great communities as well as new homes.”
Councillor Peter Jeffries, deputy leader and cabinet member for housing at Cheltenham Borough Council, added: “We have big ambitions for Cheltenham, in particular helping to tackle the shortage of quality homes available on affordable rent - and this development, turning three houses into 27 modern homes, is just the beginning.
“This site is a stone’s throw away from one of the most exciting projects in the history of the town, the new ‘Garden Village’ in West Cheltenham, and will help to bring our thriving communities closer together.”
Mark Harries, associate director at E G Carter & Co Ltd, said: “We are delighted to have broken ground on this project and working with Cheltenham Borough Homes along with other key supply chain partners such as Architects Kendal Kingscott and Structural Engineers Craddys shows the great partnership the project has formed.
“It’s always great to be working on projects that will benefit and greatly improve the local area – Monkscroft Villas is one that will achieve both of these. We are looking forward to the residents occupying their new homes in Spring 20201.”The redevelopment of the site and construction of the new homes has already begun and should be completed by early 2021.
